Southside Neighborhood Revitalization, I AM SOUTHSIDE Campaign, and Emancipation Celebration
Ponderings from Paducah - July 29, 2025
Wow! In the last few months, so much has happened regarding the Southside. We are well on our way to adopting a new revitalization plan with the City Commission holding a second reading in mid-August.
It’s been a process full of public input. We have hosted public hearings, vetted it through the Planning Commission, and listened to our Southside Steering Committee. The 56-page draft plan to restore the Southside neighborhoods is currently on the city’s website. It has been posted for public review since mid-May with anticipation of the next steps. After the formal adoption in August, we can get to work on making the plan a reality.
Throughout the public hearing process, the citizenry’s mantra came to life. We heard from so many people who have a heart and a love for the Southside community. Many offered memories and sentimental tributes – these residents have a passion for true community. Therefore, the City of Paducah’s “I am Southside” campaign will kick off in conjunction with the August 8th Emancipation Celebration to be held in Robert Coleman Park on Saturday, August 9.
The August 8th celebration is a time-honored event. We see friends and family return to Coleman Park year after year to celebrate this special season. This regionally-celebrated event commemorates the freeing of enslaved people primarily in Western Kentucky and Central Tennessee.
To honor this special day, enjoy the Emancipation Celebration Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 9. Immediately following the parade, we encourage you to partake in the activities at Coleman Park and visit the City of Paducah booth. We will have art projects for the children, August 8th celebration stickers, and photo opportunities to proudly display “I AM SOUTHSIDE.” Plus, we will have materials highlighting the next steps in our revitalization efforts. It will be a great time to experience the Southside. We look forward to seeing you there!
